wibble Podcast #04, #05 & #18 RSS: If you prefer, here is the wibble • Podcast RSS feed (copy and paste the URL into podcast app of your choice). Playlists & Notes are included in the RSS feed.

On Wednesday, October 28, 2009, sunteam_paul finished his supper, turned to his computer and typed a brief announcement:

"Wibble is a new podcast which covers chip music from the computers and consoles of the 80's and 90's (including Spectrum, C64, PC-Engine, Mega Drive, Arcade, etc.)…Please have a listen and let me know what you think."

And so began wibble, successor to PC-Engine City Podcast. After a two year hiatus, Paul was back with a new podcast—a podcast with a much broader scope than its predecessor. For many North American listeners, this was the first exposure to UK's microcomputer scene of the 1980's—their virgin ears had never heard tunes from the Amstrad or Spectrum before. I suspect that some folks were ignorant of the larger C64 and Amiga music scenes as well. Thankfully, wibble provided these cretins with a much-needed education. Enjoy…

Banner for wibble Podcast #11 LIST OF EPISODES: In total, there were 24 full-length shows, released over a period of 21 months…

THANKS: A great big Thank You! goes out to sunteam_paul (of PC Engine Software Bible) for creating the show, allowing us to re-host it and providing invaluable information/assets. Also, thanks to SuperPlay for recognizing the need to archive this show and spearheading the project. Also, thanks to Mathius for reminding me that I never finished this page and inspiring me to finish it. Finally, this page would not exist if it weren't for the support of the fine folks at pcenginefx.com forums.

NOTES: Crime Fighters.

Our host: "Hello and welcome to wibble, the show that squeezes the toothpaste of nostalgia onto the brush of your brain." Thus began wibble.

Four years earlier, in 2005, sunteam_paul had created the PC-Engine City Podcast. In the inaugural episode of PCE City, Paul explained, "I was inspired to make it [PC Engine City] after hearing the C64 Take-Away podcast by Jan Lund Thomsen." Four years after uttering those words (and two years after ending PCE City), Paul had come full-circle with a new podcast—wibble—which featured chiptunes from various platforms (including many stalwart C64 SID classics).

NOTES: Space Harrier. "Welcome to wibble, the show that pushes the retro-music baby into the doctor's hands of your ears."

Our host is eagerly awaiting the delivery of Insanity (Super CD•ROM2), a homebrew PCE/TG-16 game developed by Aetherbyte Studios. Insanity is a clone of the classic arcade game Berzerk.

FUN FACT: Back in the 1980's, our host used a handheld tape recorder to capture songs from arcade cabinets (such as Konami's Aliens).

NOTES: Ghouls 'n Ghosts.

Our host warns us that the Amiga and C64 "interpretations" of the Ghouls 'n Ghosts soundtrack might be somewhat surprising—and they are. Both the Amiga and C64 versions are fantastic, atmospheric and add to the rich legacy of Ghouls 'n Ghosts (even if the compositions are not canon in the Capcom series).

Personally, I agree with our host—we all have benefitted from the non-canon ports/conversions of arcade games to C64/Amiga/UK microcomputers. While our host was simply referring to music, I would expand the argument to be all-inclusive: anything (music/in-game art/coverart/etc.) that adds new/alternate content to a game benefits us today in 2XXX. Naturally, in the 1980's, I might have felt otherwise if I was limited to the software offerings of UK microcomputers...but thankfully I am not in that position. Nobody is today.

These days, we can all appreciate the wacky/unorthodox/creative ports/conversions/marketing/localizations of yesteryear. This is why I have long-argued (elsewhere) that the North American coverart for TG-16 software was (is) a benefit to be appreciated, instead of a stigma to be endured.

For the folks who lust for "purity" and "faithfulness" in ports/conversions—you do realize we would be poorer for it, do you not? Original content (non-canon) and/or variations of canon only benefit us, in my humble opinion. Or, put another way: I WOULD NOT WANT TO LIVE IN A COSMOS WHERE TIM FOLLIN'S TUNES FOR Ghouls 'n Ghosts were mere carbon-copies of the arcade's soundtrack.
