PCE City Podcast #21-#23 HELP: Submit your playlists/notes/corrections to help!

AN EXCEPTIONALLY BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PCE CITY PODCAST: Here is the executive summary… a fellow PCE fan (sunteam_paul) needed to put his creative energy to good use. He had already been archiving and documenting PCE music for his PC Engine Bible project. But he wanted to do more. The result was the wonderful PC-Engine City Podcast which, over the course of two years, developed a personality and mythos all unto itself. It still stands as one of the more unique podcasts dedicated to video game music and/or PC-Engine console. Enjoy!

BANNERS: All of the original banners have been restored! Originally, banners #19-#24 were the only ones that could be salvaged. The rest of the banners had evaporated into the ether of the interwebs. Recently, however, sunteam_paul kindly found (or recreated?) banners #1-#18. Happiness was restored to the kosmos.

MORE MUSIC: Speaking of happiness, wibble • Classic Chiptunes Podcast should also bring a smile to your face. Or someone's face, anyway.

Banner for PC Engine City Podcast #20 LIST OF EPISODES: In total, there were 25 full-length shows, three "Intermissions" and one extra "Pirate Radio" episode…

THANKS: A great big Thank You! goes out to sunteam_paul (of PC Engine Software Bible) for creating the show, allowing us to re-host it and providing invaluable information/assets. Also, thanks to SuperPlay for recognizing the need to archive this show and spearheading the project. Finally, this page would not exist if it weren't for the support of the fine folks at pcenginefx.com forums.

CONFESSION: Many, many years ago I said I was going to write a short history of the PC Engine City Podcast. To prove my noble intentions, I jotted down a few bullet points. However, five (or ten?) years passed with nary a sentence, let alone a blurb, about the history of PC-Engine City Podcast being written.

Until a few moments ago, that is.

NOTES: "Welcome to PC-Engine City!" are the first, enthusiastic words uttered by our host. sunteam_paul later explains, "I was inspired to make it [PC Engine City] after hearing the C64 Take-Away podcast by Jan Lund Thomsen." Interestingly, sunteam_paul would revisit the Commodore 64 with his next podcast—wibble • classic chiptunes—which featured chiptunes from various platforms (including many stalwart SID classics).

NOTES: Special "Songs with Vocals" episode, with guest DJ Sakura Peach. Keenly aware that not everyone enjoys bland J-pop, our host offers the following disclaimer: "You grumpy old men and women out there have permission to skip this one." This can mean only one thing: The end is nigh, comrades, the end is nigh. Guaranteed.

NOTES: Our host humbly 1CC's Tatsujin whilst DJ'ing. He laments the wasted potential of the City Hunter license with Sunsoft's generic platformer (at least the music is decent!)… In fact, these two tunes from City Hunter, sandwiched between Urusei Yatsura at the opening and Tenchi Muyo at the closing, create a loosely-themed anime vibe to this episode. Never missing an opportunity to slag off Telenet, our host confides that Avenger is not nearly as pathetic a shoot-em-up as he had initially thought.

MYSTERY SOUND CHALLENGE (19:22): What game is the sound effect from? Answer revealed in episode #15.

NOTES: "Now with twenty five percent less fat," utters our host at the top of the show. I always wondered about this comment. What did it mean? Later, in a potato chip-induced stupor, I realized that 6/8 (75 percent) of the games in this episode are "shooters"…and then I realized that I still had no idea what the hell our host was talking about. Twenty five percent less fat, indeed. Prior to the close of the show, our host announces a plan to collect aneCD-ROMotes about listeners' virginal experiences with PCE and TG-16 (material for a future episode).

NOTES: The GUESS THE SOUND CHALLENGE in this show is pretty damn challenging. I thought it was from Super Adventure Island (and/or Wonderboy III: Monster Lair) when your life bar drops critically low. Or when you bump into a rock. NOTES: Happy 20th Birthday PCE! "Open up a beer, sit back and enjoy the absolutely classic theme to Space Harrier," advises our host at the top of the show. This marks the second appearance of ultracomputer Odonadon 2000, mistakenly referred to as merely a supercomputer by our host (see Episode #15 for the debut of Odonadon 2000, whose knowledge banks are tapped to elucidate listeners on the intricacies of the Wonderboy series). In the current episdoe, Odonadon 2000's vast memory and processing power provides a brief history of the PCE.

Has our stalwart host been disappointed with the low participation rate from listeners? Or perhaps senility is to blame? Regardless of the reason, Odonadon 2000 makes another appearance in this episode, making him (it?) a veritable co-host of the PC-Engine City Podcast. ASIDE: Where's Doraemon? I want Doraemon back on the show, too.

TRIVIA CHALLENGE: Circle the correct answer. Our opinionated host alleges that (Lunar Eclipse / Demons Undulate) is the superior tune in Naxat's Alien Crush. (26 points for correct answer!)

NOTES: SEGA Special! At over 45 minutes in length, this episdoe is Chock Full o' SEGA. Our host has often praised Sega's smorgasbord of classic games (on all platforms), but now, for your convenience, nearly all of the PCE ports have been compiled into one succulent entree. A feast for your ears, comrade! A feast for your ears. Predicatably, Odonadon 2000 rears his silicon chip to offer a primer on the "16-bit Wars" of the early 1990's. Things get far more interesting when tensions rise between Odonadon 2000 and our venerable host. "I could kick your ass at Gate of Thunder!" taunts Odonadon 2000. I don't doubt it. Our host has a history of struggling with shoot-em-ups. Also, as a true LOVER OF SEGA, our host prefers the Sega Master System (SMS) renditions of many songs presented in this episode. I'll be honest—there is a special place for the SMS tunes in my heart, too.

TRIVIA CHALLENGE:

(A) According to our host, there is a special place in Hell for the folks responsible for the PCE port of _______________. (83 points for correct answer!)

(B) Circle the correct answers. At the end of the show, our host timidly whispers that the (SMS / PCE) port of Shinobi is a better game, but concedes that the (SMS / PCE) version offers better tunes. (7 points for each correct answer!)

NOTES: Ordyne, which usually doesn't garner much attention from shoot-em-up afficiandos—if only because it is merely average amongst PCE's stable of champions—is given some much-needed love for a lush, PSG tune that, in the words of our host, "very nicely represents everything that the PC-Engine chip sound is all about. It made me feel all nostalgic and wobbly inside." ALSO: Crest of Wolf could have been a great beat-em-up for the PCE, but ends up as a mediocre entry in the genre.

NOTES: October 30th? Yes, 10.30.2007 marked PCE's twentieth anniversary, a fitting day to air the final episode of PC-Engine City. It should come as no surprise that our esteemed host opens this episode with a track from Ys I and reveals that the final episode is dedicated exclusively to Ys. ANECD-ROMOTE: Our host fell in love with Ys I on the Sega Master System. Later, after our host played PC Kid (PC Genjin) at a local shop, he traded in all his Sinclair Spectrum gear for a PC-Engine. He never looked back.

NOTES: Damn, what a sublime track of mellow lounge muzak from F1 Circus Special. It is a perfect track to play whilst cleaning up a mess or doing your chores. Over the years, I have routinely acquired games just to see if wonderful music/artwork was hidden in otherwise "undesirable" titles... this episode reminded me that I better see what other tracks are on Nichibutsu's F1 Circus Special and Hudson's/Red's Tengai Makyo—Fun Kabuki Den
